As part of the planning process, tribes were asked to select a “culture keeper” to join a group with tribal health directors and council leaders to discuss the role of culture in the regional healing center.

They discussed similarities and differences in culture across the tribes and recommended ways for an inter-tribal healing center to respect all tribal differences and guide people toward healing.

To establish a name and identity, the Culture Keepers submitted various names and ideas. A citizen of the Northern Cheyenne tribe suggested Red Shield 8 Nations, which quickly resonated with the group. Learn more about the symbolism behind the name.

Red Shield 8 Nations engaged Culture Keepers to advise on services, facility layout, and design. They have deep cultural and language knowledge and were crucial in identifying these eight key cultural values to guide the Center.

As the project moves forward with development and construction, the Culture Keepers will continue their involvement to ensure culture remains at the forefront of every aspect of the healing center.
